Mismanaging games since 2002

Twins 4 Tribe 3

Kevin Slowey was cruising for 6+ innings last night, until things got bumpy in the 7th.  I blame Robby Incmikowski (or whatever the hell his name is) for this.  For those of you who weren’t watching the FSN telecast, after the sixth inning Incmikowski said something along the lines of  “Kevin Slowey now has his sixth consecutive quality start in the books”  Not if he gives up 4 runs in the seventh he doesn’t.  What a jerk.

The homer Mijaresgave up was unfortunate, but Vic Martinez is a great hitter from both sides of the plate so I don’t think its an issue.  At least there was nobody on base.

The Twins again featured a lineup that had more black holes than I care to count (four) at the bottom.  Hopefully Cuddyer and Crede come back soon.  Then we will have a lineup that looks something like this:

  1. Span
  2. Mauer
  3. Morneau
  4. Kubel
  5. Cuddyer
  6. Crede
  7. Harris
  8. Free out, I mean second base.
  9. Gomez
As much as I want to like him, we can no longer put Young in the lineup.  He is simply over matchedby even mediocre major league pitching.  Gomez has shown both on the field an in the stats book that he makes up for his inability at the plate with his exceptional defense.

Once again Joe Mauer has proved he is the second coming.  Speaking of Joe, was anyone else bewildered (upset?) that Ullger held Mauer up at third (I don’t recall which inning it was, I think it was the third)?  He was about halfway home and running at full speed and Ullger throws up the stop sign.  If I were Mauer I probably would have kept going.  At the very least it would have been a close play at the plate.

If Harris isn’t the starting shortstop for the forseeable future Gardy and I will have words.

In other news, check out the sweet new Budweiser Roof Deck going in at Target Field.  Looks like a great place to have a few dozen beers and watch the Twins.

I was expecting a comment about Joe Nathan picking up the last out in the eighth- kudos to Gardy for pulling out all the stops to make sure the Twins got the win.

Agreed with you about Delmon- it’s unfortunate, but he’s just not hitting a lick. If Young is release, which team picks him up?

I think we should put him on the Dontrelle List. Meaning make up something so we can put him on the DL. I was going to mention something about Gardy using Nathan in the 8th, but I didn’t because I felt mentioning it would make a big deal out of it when it should become more and more commonplace. Not all the time, but in games like last night it should be a foregone conclusion that your best reliever is used to get the last 4 or 5 outs, not just the last three.

Bringing in Nathan for a 4 out save was definitely the right move, and I was happy to see that. And I’m glad it worked, because if it didn’t you can be sure that Gardy would never, ever try it again.

We can’t let Delmon play any more, but we can’t just release him. He still has potential. I think we put him on the Dontrelle List and let him get straightened out in Fort Myers for a while.

If Mauer had hurt himself stopping when Ullger put up the late stop sign, I think that has to be a fire-able offense. As in, Ullger should lose his job. And possibly be killed. Oh, and the Indians’ catcher, Shoppach, tweaked his leg when he stopped quickly between second and third; don’t tell me it’s not dangerous.

Yeah, Ullger’s move was stupid- he actually started the windmill before changing his mind. If Mauer was thrown out, either at third or home, because he couldn’t stop, it’s all on Ullger. I’m not even going to think about injuries.

The Indians are going to field an entire team of AAA call-ups soon if they keep getting injured at this rate. Wonder if that team would win a series vs. the Nationals.

Ullger is a buffoon… it’s been more times than not that he’s made a bad decision as the 3B coach… as Erica pointed out, Ullger started the “come on in” motion with his right arm and then paused before putting up the STOP sign half way down the line… Mauer would have been out at home had he gone through and he would have been out at third had they hit the cut off man… just a stupid stupid play by Ullger and he’s lucky it didn’t cost the Twins the game or Mauer (I shudder at the thought)…

Side note on the FSN broadcasters: They all need to learn to shut the hell up once in a while… can we do a game where none of them talk?

Gardy – I know it took everything you had to let Nathan pitch the last out in the 8th, but congrats, Nathan’s head didn’t spontaneously com bust when he came in, see, it IS OKAY!

Thanks to Span, Mauer, and Morneau for winning that game for us… Harris contributed as well on Defense (I really think we dont miss ANYthing in the field with him out there)

and Mauer… well, he’s just not human.
