Twins 10 A’s 5
I only watched the first six innings of the game because I was tired. I would use this time to get on a rant about the uselessness of time zones, but I won’t. When I woke up to two text messages that read as follows:
This is getting uglyand about 15 minutes later from another friend
How the hell do you go into the ninth with a ten run lead and need to call on Nathan to bail you out?So I rushed to my computer to see what in God’s name happened, and saw that our lovely bullpen teamed up with Baker to almost blow the game. Now, Baker pitched very well, but I question the decision to leave him in. You know he will give up a big inning. It hadn’t occurred through 8 innings, so by process of elimination it was going to happen in the ninth. Why leave him in? Why not bring in Guerrier or someone to start and finish the ninth? What is probably a worse decision is bringing in Crain with the bases loaded. There is no way he gets three outs without giving up a run. No chance in hell. This is Jesse Crain we are talking about. Anyway, a win is a win (is a win, for some reason Gardy felt like saying it three times on the post game show which apparently FSN re-airs at 6am). The offense looked good, especially in the sixth. Delmon Young had his first extra base hit since April, but he still sucks. Hopefully this Span “dizziness” thing isn’t serious and we won’t be without him for long.
Who bats leadoff today? Tolbert? Gomez? Not good. I think we need to move Mauer back to the 2 hole. But I bet Gardy does something like Tolbert-Harris-Mauer…. Not cool.
Although I do like that Gardy admitted he might be willing to leave Harris at short and play Punto at second when he comes off the DL this weekend.
Another bit of good news: we have a late afternoon game today followed by 4 day games. Dick mentioned that maybe redmond catches this evening (I think the game is at like 5 central time or something) then Mauer can catch Thursday afternoon and the three day games at Wrigley since he can’t DH him.

According to MLB.com, the game tonight is at 9 PM again.
And by the way, I must be missing the sarcasm, but these day games are horrible, horrible news. Especially for me. Since Thursday’s 2:35 PM start means I’ll have to leave work before the game is over … and on Friday we play the Cubs so I can’t watch the game. What a disaster! I thought they installed lights in that god forsaken hell hole of a stadium. Argh!
While the 9th inning collapse cast a pall on an otherwise good win … there’s a reason you call it “comfortably cruising to victory” when you build a giant lead like that. And the reason is that you can absorb a bullpen collapse.
Also … this is the first time in a few days that Mauer, Morneau, and Kubel actually hit. Last time it happened, we scored 11 runs. This time around, we scored 10. Are these guys absurdly good, or what?
Yeah, you’re right about tonights game. Not sure why I thought tonight was an afternoon game. The reason I’m excited about the 4 noon games in a row is that Mauer can play all of them. I’m excited that they all start at the same time, I’d feel the same way if they were all night games. It is particularly important this weekend because we can’t DH him like we normall would on a sunday game.
Cubs Games: Friday @ 1:20 (CT), Saturday @ 12:05 (CT), and Sunday @ 1:20 (CT)…
Note: We face Harden on Saturday who just came off the DL, that should be interesting… Randy Wells on Friday and Ted Lilly on Sunday…
I’ll be at Friday/Saturday’s games – anyone else going down this weekend?
From Last Night: Span is “dizzy” again, not going to be good for us… Harris should lead off in his absence and Mauer should be back in the 2-hole… Crain is just horrible, he should be allowed to pitch and we might be better off just releasing him.. We can put Swarzak in the pen after Perkins comes back, because anything is better than Crain pitching (as we’re not safe with a 10 RUN LEAD!)
And I’m clueless as to what to do with Casilla, especially when Punto comes back… Which automatic OUT would like to play today? (Punto, Tolbert, Casilla?) Ugh. At least we drafted the UofM second baseman today, followed by 2 catchers!! WTF?
2 catchers makes sense. Gardy wants three catchers on every team at every level in the organization. How has Steve Tolleson been playing? He’s a middle infielder of sorts, isn’t he?
Tolleson wasn’t hitting well at AA, but has been hitting the cover off the ball in 11 games in AAA.
I’ll be at work for Friday’s game (though my boss tried to convince me to take the afternoon off). And I’ll be at the dentist during Saturday’s. Frustratingly bad timing.
