At least the players know to listen to directions ... from the worst coach of all time.

(I guess I shouldn't use hyperbole like that. Ullger's got nothing on Dusty Baker.)

It seems that our players rarely run through stop signs. Either Ullger sends them when he shouldn't, or he hesitates and doesn't give a sign until its too late.

Your boy Punto had a nice head first slide into 1st base last night. Idiot.

Was Ulger responsible for sending Punto home last night? I couldn't believe I saw him running for home when Guillen had the ball behind 3rd base.

Gardenhire only pulls a starter before 100 pitches if
a) he's hurt
b) he's recovering from being hurt
c) he can't get anyone out

I'm not aware of any injuries to Perkins, so it's likely that Gardy would have left him in longer (usually, he leaves them in too long).

Gardy does this because he likes to have his relievers start an inning rather than come in with guys on base. I think this makes sense, for the most part, and the relievers are certainly used to it.

I don't understand why Ullger thought Crain could only handle 6 pitches, then brought Reyes in to face a right handed batter. (When was the last time he actually got one of them out?) Then Reyes threw just 5 pitches, before Guerrier came in to throw 30 pitches, look a little gassed, and blow the game.

I mean, things seem to go wrong in the bullpen when we face Detroit. But that doesn't mean we should actively do the dumbest possible things in order to ensure that things will go wrong.

Thats a good point. But his pitch count was only 91. I don't know at which point the pull someone like Perkins over someone like Hernandez, but my guess is very few pitchers would be pulled due to a high pitch count if said pitch count was under 100. Either way, its a frustrating loss. We can't let a team (especially a division rival) win while committing three errors, and losing their cleanup hitter early in the game.

(Note: I didn't see the game.)

Howard Sinker's take <a href="http://ww3.startribune.com/blogs/sinker/2008/07/01/a-second-guessers-delight/" rel="nofollow">A second-guessers delight</a>.

I'm sure Gardy would have (or did make) the adjustments...the thing is, and feel free to blast me (someone has to lob them in softly), that if the organizational philosophy is to yank a starter based on the pitch count, then I think you stick with it and pull them. Naturally, there are exceptions...

The conservative estimate is that Bonds gives you 4 more wins this year. At least thats what Posanski seems to think. 4 wins could be the difference between the AL Central title or playing golf in October.

If he is for real, then this is a no-brainer. If it isn't working out then you cut him and at mostyour out a pro-rated part of his already pro-rated salary.

I think you can stick Bonds in both LF and at DH. Obviously this decreases ABs for both Young and Kubel, and effectively eliminates the need for Monroe. Also I'm not opposed to sitting Cuddyer and his 90 OPS+ down every once in a while too.

It would be a shame to see another team take a crack at him and then to see us finish in second behind the White Sox by 2 games. Granted those are hypothetical wins, but that is a conservative estimate and it might just be a shot in the arm that this team could use for the second half of the year!

Gardy's said that he wants to keep everyone in their "groove" by keeping the lineup as static as possible. Even if that means putting an 8/9 hitter in the 3 hole once a week. I guess.

I don't know. I find it hard to imagine that a major league hitter would somehow be "confused" by hitting 5th instead of 6th, or something.

(Or maybe this goes hand in hand with Gardenhire's desire to ensure that none of our players are "major league" caliber hitters.)
